What

What is ValpoNetTM?

In response to the need of our business community for access to fiber, ValpoNetTM was created. ValpoNetTM is a community owned provider of dark fiber serving businesses and community organizations in the greater Valparaiso region. ValpoNetTM fiber will primarily be buried to protect fiber vulnerability and establish carrier class standards.

What is Optical Fiber?

An Optical Fiber is a flexible, transparent strand made by drawing glass to a diameter slightly thicker than that of a human hair.  These strands of fiber become the physical wiring that creates a network. Through the fiber network, information literally moves at the speed of light.

What is dark fiber?

Dark fiber is an “unlit” strand of fiber that is ready to transmit data.  Dark fiber offers an incredibly fast, secure, cost-effective solution to support any broadband network as well as substantial user flexibility.  A user has the option to develop a fiber network to their specific needs that is secure.  A user has more options to negotiate bandwidth rates from multiple providers.

Why dark fiber?

Dark fiber offers an incredibly fast, secure, cost-effective solution to support any broadband network. The reasons for purchasing dark fiber vary by customer, but some of the more common justifications include a need to control system scalability, network management, evolution technology (for growing companies) and system latency control.

What does dark fiber do for the business community?

Most telecom and cable companies have fiber as parts of their network, but they may not connect everyone to the network with fiber. The goal with ValpoNetTM is to provide a vendor neutral, open access infrastructure that allows end users and aggregators alike to access a fully allocated fiber network for voice and data communication.

Don’t existing companies already have fiber networks?

Most telecom and cable companies have fiber as parts of their network, but they may not connect everyone to the network with fiber. The goal with ValpoNetTM is to provide a vendor neutral, open access infrastructure that allows end users and aggregators alike to access a fully allocated fiber network for voice and data communication.

Where will ValpoNetTM’s dark fiber be located?

Our system map is available on our web page. It depicts a northern loop, southern loop and east/west connector for the “backbone” of the dark fiber project. Legs, which are offshoots from our backbone, extend to targeted areas where demand has been identified.  Plans for current and future legs will be updated.  It is very important that interested user contact ValpoNetTM.

When will ValpoNetTM be placed in service?

ValpoNetTM is scheduled to be live in Q4 2017.

Is ValpoNetTM going to compete directly with carriers that purchase dark fiber from VapoNetTM?

No. ValpoNetTM provides an infrastructure resource through dark fiber installation.   ValpoNet will not provide bandwidth.  The fiber infrastructure will allow local businesses to develop their own network and secure their own bandwidth.  It will also offer any internet service providers reasonably priced access to fiber, which will benefit local businesses.

Does ValpoNetTM offer path diversity?

The backbone for ValpoNetTM offers two loops around the community offering redundancy. Customers can take diverse paths on the loop or through alternative service providers.

Does ValpoNetTM have cross connection capability?

We currently have identified 4 community cross connect points designed to help ValpoNetTM customers tie in to the rest of the world.
